Vegetative arranging: create a natural and garden-like floral arrangement.

Vegetative arranging is all about the way flowers grow naturally. By placing the stems upright as much as possible and working with different heights, you create the effect of flowers coming straight out of the ground. Choose garden-like flowers, graceful grasses, and natural flower shapes to enhance the realistic appearance.

In this Academy video, Silk-ka stylist Peter Poels shows you step-by-step how to create a vegetative arrangement with silk flowers. He shares practical tips on flower selection, growth direction, and composition, so you can create an arrangement that is almost indistinguishable from real flowers.

Frequently asked questions

A vegetative arrangement is a floral arrangement that mimics the natural growth habit of flowers and plants. Instead of tying flowers together like a traditional bouquet, you place them in a way that is reminiscent of how they grow in nature. This creates an airy, playful, and realistic whole.
In nature, many flowers grow upward from the ground toward the light. By placing the stems upright as much as possible, you mimic this natural growth direction. This makes it look as if the flowers are actually growing out of the substrate. This gives the arrangement a calm, credible, and natural look.
Choose flowers with a natural, garden-like appearance. Think of cosmos, delphinium, daisies, and other graceful flowers that you would also encounter in a blooming garden. Combine different flower shapes with subtle grasses and greenery. It is precisely the variation between delicate and full flowers that ensures a realistic effect.
Work with different heights and place the flowers in small, natural groups. Ensure that not all flowers are placed at exactly the same distance from each other. By placing some flowers slightly higher or lower and deliberately leaving space open, a playful composition is created that resembles a real garden.
Pay particular attention to the growth direction, flower choice, and mutual proportions. Place the flowers upright as much as possible, combine different heights, and use garden-like flower species. Avoid a distribution that is too rigid or symmetrical and let each flower stand out in a natural way. Finish your vegetative arrangement with a natural-looking base of moss and/or wood bark.
We use the following materials: dry floral foam, tape, moss, and bark. First, you fill the vase or bowl with dry floral foam; this will be the base in which you insert your flowers. For extra secure attachment, we often fix this with tape. When you have finished creating your vegetative arrangement, we recommend filling it in with natural materials such as moss and/or wood bark for a realistic result.
