Lantern plant (Physalis) is a genus of 75 to 90 species of plants in the nightshade family (Solanaceae). The botanical name Physalis means bladder, and is derived from the shape of the grown calyx of the real lantern plant (Physalis alkekengi) that encloses the fruit after flowering. The real lantern plant is the only representative of this genus in Europe; most other species are native to Mexico
